Supporting Older Adults in Primary Care Dental Practice: A Review of the Seattle Care Pathway

Summary: In collaboration with the National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA), this National Center for Equitable Care for Elders (NCECE) webinar will focus on an evidence-based approach to effectively manage older adults’ oral health needs relative to the complexity of their medical histories and cognitive impairments. Participants will consider patient-centered communication techniques to better anticipate dental challenges and develop a supportive care plan in response.

After completing this session, participants will be able to

  • Understand frailty among older adults and its connection to oral health and related behaviors 

  • Describe the Seattle Care Pathway’s defined levels of dependency in older patients 

  • Identify how members of the healthcare team can utilize the Seattle Care Pathway to help improve the oral health status of older adults

  • Consider promising practices from a health center implementation of an older adult dental program
