Consultant
Dr. Lipsitz is the Chief of Gerontology, Beth Israel Deaconess Med Center; a Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School; the Director of the Institute for Aging Research, and Vice President for Academic Medicine at Hebrew Senior Life. Dr. Lipsitz was one of the first geriatricians to be trained in the Harvard Geriatric Fellowship Program. He acquired subsequent funding for his studies conducted during his fellowship through an NIA-funded Program Project, which he directed for 20 years. The program project supported the prospective, observational MOBILIZE Boston Study, which revealed novel risk factors for falls over the past 10 years. More recently, Dr. Lipsitz completed a Health and Aging Policy Fellowship funded by Atlantic Philanthropies and began a series of health care service projects focused on improving post-acute and long-term care of older adults. Two of these projects, called ECHO-AGE and ECHO-CT employ video-communication technology to extend the expertise in acute care hospitals to sites of post-acute and chronic geriatric care. The ECHO AGE program at BIDMC trains health care professionals on how to improve the care of elderly patients suffering from dementia and associated behavioral problem. The program uses ECHO, which connects primary care providers in underserved areas with specialists at academic hubs, making it easier for medical professionals to access the continuing education they need and provide healthcare to more people.” ECHO is an HRSA-recognized national model.
