Decision Aid Cards

Strengthen Clinical Decision-Making

Summary: This series of decision aid cards translate evidence-based clinical knowledge into practical tools for communication, shared decision-making, prevention, and treatment planning. Each will give students structured approaches for discussing common clinical decisions with patients. Students will learn that appropriate treatment is not simply about identifying the "best" clinical option, and learn to weigh: clinical evidence, patient preferences, functional needs, treatment burden, and quality of life.

By using the decision aid cards, predoctoral dental students will be able to:

  1. Explain common oral health conditions and prevention strategies using clear, patient-centered language.
  2. Compare treatment and management options by considering clinical needs, risks, benefits, treatment burden, and quality of life.
  3. Elicit patients’ preferences, priorities, and goals and incorporate them into oral health recommendations.
